W/c 23/11/2015 - Week 7

After a week of cup matches, it was back to the Winter League programme for Canterbury & District Tennis Association last week.

Premier Division

A tense match between top of the league Hoath A and second placed Hoath B resulted in the two teams swapping positions when the B team inflicted a 6-3 win over their fellow clubmates. Two points separated the teams prior to this match but the three point difference in this result pushed Hoath B into the top spot. John Ferguson, Ian Mileham and Phil Thomas managed a win each for Hoath A, but Richard Carden continued his winning spree with 3 wins for Hoath B and with 2 from Simon Hillier and 1 from David Jeavons secured the result. A tight doubles match gave Hoath A some consolation, winning 3-2.
Another close encounter developed when Heron A met Hoath C. A good all round team performance by Heron was just too much for the Hoath team. Heron’s Arthur Martin and Dianne Pearce managed 2 wins each and 1 win by Roger Pingram edged the wins by Chris Hearn (2), Ben Greenwood (1) and Mike Howard (1) for Hoath. However, the Hoath side proved too strong in the doubles with a comfortable 3-1 win.
In a club derby between Warriors 2 and Warriors 1, 3 wins from Joe Britnall, 2 from Paul Waumsley and 1 from Ian Cooke gave Warriors 2 a 6-3 victory, with Josh Nashed (2) and Kell Davies (1) earning the 3 points for Warriors 1. In the doubles, Warriors 2 had to come from behind twice before winning the 5th leg for a 3-2 victory.
Harry Law was invincible for Faversham A when they encountered Heron B. His three straight 3-0 wins, backed up by 2 for Ethan Brady and 1 from Tina Stewart was enough to produce a 6-3 win. For the Herons, Arthur Martin won 2 and Mick Eames 1. In a close doubles match, Faversham clawed their way back from 2-0 down to 2-2 before losing the 5th leg, giving the Heron side a consolation 3-2 doubles win.

Division 1

In Division 1, Chestfield Warriors 3A had to fight hard to earn a 5-4 win over Choughs A. Jonny Nevett was the champion of the night for Warriors, winning all his 3 matches, helped by 2 from Ricky Kay. Roy Coles managed 2 wins for Choughs, together with 1 each from Heather Robertson and Derek Smith. The 3-1 doubles win also went in favour of the Warriors.
Another close 5-4 result went in favour of Herne Bay B when they welcomed Iron Room B to their table. Vince Corbin and Simon Lee managed 2 wins apiece with 1 from Steve Dawson, to earn the win for the Bays’. Michelle Kingsland did well to secure 2 wins for the Iron Room, as did Geoff Jordan. Herne Bay then went on to earn a close, but satisfying 3-2 doubles result to round off the night.
Whitstable Natives A lost heavily at home to Faversham B. With a 7-2 result in favour of Faversham, Nico Waters (2), Mark Fox (2) and Matthew Waters (3) for Faversham, were just too strong for the Natives. Nick Fairweather and Adam Goodhall salvaged the 2 points for the home team, who then lost a tight doubles match 3-2.
In maintaining his 100% record, Bob Edwards’ 3 wins for Herne Bay C was not enough to stop their visitors, Chestfield Warriors 3 from winning this match 6-3. The irrepressible Edwards proved to be the only stumbling block for Roger Jordan, Denis Cannon and John Wickings who all won 2 games each for the Warriors victory. The ensuing doubles match was a close contest with Warriors needing a 5th leg win for a 3-2 result.

Division 2

The Division 2 side of Chestfield Warriors 7 took on Chestfield Warriors 5, but despite 2 wins from Linda Wickings and one from Aaron Hollingsworth, lost 6-3. Frank Findlay was on form for Warriors 5 with 3 wins plus 2 from Peter Paetow and 1 from Tony Morgan, giving them the result. Warriors 7 fought hard in the doubles match but lost 3-2 in the 5th.
An uncompromising Whitstable Natives B overwhelmed Chestfield Warriors 6A with 9-0 whitewash. Tony Causer, Gordon Williams and David Block for the visiting Natives won all their matches and then completed the evening with a 3-1 doubles win.
An unstoppable Jim Burns won all his games for Herne Bay F at home to Chestfield Warriors 6 and with a further 2 wins from Graham Waters and 1 from Graeme Sopp inflicted a 6-3 victory over the travelling Warriors. Richard Bothamley, John Metcalfe and Bob Young all won a game each to earn 3 points for the away team who then gleaned some satisfaction from the match with a 3-0 doubles win.

Division 3

A Division 3 derby match saw Blean C overwhelm their fellow clubmates Blean B with an 8-1 victory. Kevin West and Dave Mason won 3 games apiece for the winners, with Keith Ackland (2) dropping one game against Laurie Newman who gained the only point for Blean B. Blean C then carried their winning streak into the doubles with a 3-1 result.
The narrow 5-4 result in favour of Chestfield Warriors 11 over Faversham D was unusual in that 8 of the 9 singles games were won by a 3-0 margin. Shaun Reid was the hero of the hour winning his 3 matches for Warriors, coupled with a win each for James Reid and Rowan Brough. Harry Hutchinson and Alan Culver won 2 games each for Faversham and a close 3-2 doubles win for the Faversham team restored their disappointment.
Whitstable Natives C could do little to stop their guests, Herne Bay G cruising to an 8-1 victory. With Peter Tregar winning the only game for Natives, Paul Messenger (3), Roger Townsin (3) and Robert Nutter (2) for Bay, inflicted the damage. However the doubles was a much closer affair, eventually won by the Herne Bay side 3-2.
Les Taylor and Al Parkes were on song for Herne Bay I, both winning all their matches for a 6-3 victory over Chestfield Warriors 9 whose 3 points came from a win each for Bob Hassam, Caroline Hanson and Bill Hackney. Unfortunately for Warriors, the Bays then cemented their result with a 3-1 doubles win.
Chestfield Warriors 10 succumbed to their stronger Choughs C visitors whose 6-3 triumph came courtesy of 3 wins by Jackie Fok, 2 for Zurafa Zakel and 1 from Joe Asmah. 2 wins from Simon Howe and 1 by Bernard Ebeck for Warriors gave the scoreline some respectability, but the salt was added when Choughs rubbed in comfortable a 3-0 doubles result.

Division 4

The Keeble family, playing as Chestfield Warriors 14 just edged a 3-2 result over Chestfield Warriors 17. 2 wins by Harvey and one from Sebastian was enough to cancel out a win each by Shem Lejarde and Harry Brickland for Warriors 17, who then lost out in the competition doubles 3-0.
Another family team, Chestfield Warriors 15’s Rob and Jack Yates, were beaten 4-1 by Chestfield Warriors 19. Paul Anthony and Mark Dixon earned the winning result, with Rob Yates gaining a solitary point for the losers. A 3-0 competition doubles win also went in favour of Warriors 19.
