Table Tennis Cup Report Round 2, 2015 – 2016

Cup week 2 took precedence over the Winter League programme last week, giving teams from different divisions an opportunity to compete against each other.

In the team handicapped Dare Cup, premier division Heron B were drawn against a determined Chestfield Warriors 6 from Division 2, who took full advantage of their 240 point handicap start. Peter Chapman, Mick Eames and Ian Blogg for Heron couldn’t stop the Warriors from accumulating the necessary points, despite winning most of the games. A delighted John Metcalfe took a leg off Peter and Ian, and with team mates Richard Bothamley and Bob Young, held off Heron to win this match by 82 points.
Herne Bay B, currently 2nd in Division 1, welcomed Chestfield Warriors 10 who are mid-table in Division 3. Warriors began with a massive 300 point handicap over their opponents, Vince Corbin, Steve Dawson and Simon Lee. The Bay side battled hard to overcome the disadvantage, but with Warriors Simon Howe taking 2 legs off Steve Dawson, and Bernard Ebeck taking a leg off a surprised Simon Lee, the damage was done and the away side edged a 16 point result.
Peter Tregar, Chris Near and Peter Godden for Whitstable Natives C from Division 3, took on a travelling Choughs A from Division 1. Although winning all their matches, Cliff Ball, Roy Baker and Dave Wilkinson for Choughs could not overcome Native’s 300 point advantage, allowing the Natives to procede to the next round by 36 points.
4th in Division 3, Choughs C played visiting Chestfield Warriors 6A who are bottom but one in Division 2. A meagre 8 point advantage for the home team of Jackie Fox, David Goddard and Richard Partridge, was soon overcome by David Chapman, Colin Relf and Peter McCaig for the Warriors, who finished the evening with an 83 point win.
Chestfield Warriors 19, at home to Herne Bay H, began this match with a 56 point start over the visitors. Barbara Ayling, Linda Sopp and Arnold Bearman for the Bays’ nibbled away at the lead but their appetite just wasn’t enough to overcome the Warriors team of Paul Anthony, Mark Dixon and Jan Aldridge who crept home with a 25 point win. Linda, playing up from Division 4, did well to win 5 of the 6 legs in her games.
The 3rd Division team of Herne Bay I went to Chestfield Warriors 17 from Division 4, needing to overcome a 128 point handicap. The young Warriors, Callum Minnis, Shem and Shalom Lejarde were overwhelmed by Al Parkes, Simon Chambers and Les Taylor, with Herne Bay coasting home by 129 points.

In the individually handicapped Lew Vale Cup, Premier Division side Chestfield Warriors 1, Steve Cannon and Kell Davies, had to call up Jonny Nevett from Division 1 to ensure a full team against Herne Bay D. Keith Blackmore, Paul Bee and Chris Howard for Bay were overpowered by the Warriors, who, after just 6 matches were 10-2 up. Just one more leg was required in the 7th match and this was provided by Jonny to give Warriors 1 a comfortable 11-2 win.
The tie between Hoath C from the Premier Division and Chestfield Warriors 3A from Division 1 went down to the wire, requiring a 3rd leg of doubles to produce a winner. Ben Greenwood, Mike Howard and Chris Hearn for Hoath were leading 10-8 going into the doubles. Ricky Kay and Jonny Nevett for the Warriors had to call on the services of Aaron Hollingsworth from Division 2 to make up their team, and the doubles match finally went in favour of the Warriors to give them an 11-10 result.
The tension was palpable in the match between Chestfield Warriors 4 from Division 1 and Choughs B from Division 2 who had to bring in Joe Asmah and Richard Partridge from Division 3 to support Joe Chan. The Warriors side of Paul Davies, Dirk Froebrich and Adam Dyer led all the way through the singles and were leading 10-8 going into the doubles. However, Choughs clawed their way back, winning the doubles 3-0 and earning themselves an excellent 11-10 win.
Despite their handicap advantage, Simon Chambers, Al Parkes and Les Taylor for Division 3 team Herne Bay I, couldn’t make it count against a strong Blean A from Division 2. Leading all through the singles the Blean side of Rob Easton, Paul Simmonds and Laurie Newman secured their passage into the next round with a 12-8 victory.
Another 12-8 result went in favour of Chestfield Warriors 10 from Division 3, who encountered fellow club mates, Division 4 side Chestfield Warriors 19. Paul Matthews, Bernard Ebeck and Simon Howe for Warriors 10 overcame the handicap disadvantage to earn the win over the Warriors 19 team of Paul Anthony, Mark Dixon and Jan Aldridge.
Sweet revenge was the order of the day when Faversham D went to Chestfield Warriors 6 in this Lew Vale Cup tie. Previously, the Warriors team of Richard Bothamley, John Metcalfe and Bob Young had eliminated the Faversham side from round 1 of the Dare Cup. However Colin Floodgate, Alan Culver and a young Harry Hutchinson were determined not to lose this one and with the match score at 9-9 after the singles, a 2-1 doubles win gave the Faversham side a satisfying 11-10 victory.

To ensure comprehensive reporting of all matches played each week, team captains are asked to submit their match cards as soon as possible to the match secretary, or to enter them on the web site. I need to collect the cards from Linda Wickings on the Saturday of that week, in order to compile the report for submission to the local newspapers for a Monday mid-day deadline. It is important to fill in the cards accurately, including the date of the match. Late cards cannot be included in the report. Many thanks
