The Canterbury Closed Tournament takes place this coming Sunday at the Abbey School, Faversham but with fewer entries than last year and some of the top players missing due to British League matches there should be some surprises in store.

There are sixteen seeds for the open singles with Phil Morford at one and Barry Chapman seeded two. Last year’s runner up Ray Jordan is seeded three with Mike Howard at four and two previous winners of the title, Ron Rowley and Alan Taylor, are seeded six and nine respectively. The most interesting prospect will be Connor Russell who is seeded eight and is due to play Phil Morford in the quarter finals if the seeding goes to plan but Connor is the only player to have beaten Phil this year so this will be worth watching.

In the mens doubles there are eight seeded pairs with Phil Morford and partner Kevin Powell seeded one and the new pairing of Ray Jordan and Lee Edgington at two. Third seeds are Dave Jeavons and Andy Roberts and the father and son pairing of Barry and Mike Chapman at four.

The vets singles again include the familiar names of Phil Morford at one, Barry Chapman two, Mike Howard three and Ron Rowley at four.

The ladies singles should be a clash between Di Pearce and Tina Stewart for the title and Di Pearce is also seeded number one in the over 60 event with team mate and league chairman Arthur Martin at three.

Both the ladies doubles and the mixed doubles are not easy to predict but in the mixed doubles the pairing of Barry Chapman and Linda Wickings will be formidable as will the Heron pair Arthur Martin and Di Pearce, however the pairing of Tina Stewart and David Jeavons and Ron Rowley and Jill Weaver should not be underestimated.
