Last week saw the start of the 2013/14 table tennis season and according to the league website fifteen matches were played through the five divisions.
In the Premier Division last season’s champions Iron Room A fielded a strong team against Hoath B and ran out 7/2 winners, with Hoath’s Mike Howard using his hard bat attacking skills to claim the two wins for Hoath but losing in the fourth set to Ray Jordan. Also in action were last season’s second placed team Hoath A against promoted CW1, with the Warriors Connor Russell making his premier division debut. As expected Hoath won 9/0 but Connor showed his potential by taking ends off both Ian Mileham and Ian Gordon but lost in straight sets to Andy Roberts, who then proved how indispensible he is by dashing off to the Thanet league and playing another three games. No wonder he looks like a junior with all that exercise !

Also played in the top division last week were clashes between Herne Bay A and Iron Room B which was a 7/2 victory for the Bay, Choughs A and Heron A which was a 6/3 victory for the home side and a resounding 9/0 win for Hoath C over promoted Herne Bay B where despite the scoreline Simon Lee narrowly lost in five sets to the in form Simon Hiller who proved that practising for 120 hours each week pays off.

Three matches were played in the first division. CW3 lost 3/6 against Iron Room C and their club mates from CW4 lost by the same score to Choughs B but Warriors Paul Davies took all three games for the losing team. In the other game Faversham A beat Whitstable Natives A by a resounding 8/1, the only Natives point coming from Adam Goodall’s win against Dennis Hill.

In Division 2 there was a 5/4 win for Herne Bay E against their D team and a win for Choughs C against their D side. Also in this division CW6 beat Blean Bravo by 5/4 and Herne Bay F beat Faversham B 9/0.

There were just two matches recorded in Division three. A strong performance from Blean C saw them beat Choughs E 8/1 and Herne Bay G won 5/4 against their H team.

The only game played in Division 4 was a 4/1 win by Herne Bay I over Herne Bay J.
