Now we are over halfway through the season players are reminded that the Canterbury Closed Tournament is due to take place at The Abbey School, Faversham on Sunday 17th March and the closing date for entries is the 28th February. Entries should be submitted to Ron Rowley via the entry form contained within the league handbook and entry to all events is free of charge to qualifying players.

It has been brought to the notice of the committee that some entries have already been received from people who have played fewer games than is required for entry into the tournament. In the past the requirement was as high as 75% of matches played in order to qualify but this has been reduced over the years and the tournament now has a rule of just four matches to have been played . The committee have made the decision that this is an absolute minimum requirement and no exceptions can be made, so anyone needing to fulfill the quota should play any outstanding matches before the 28th February.

In the Premier Division this week title contenders Iron Room A convincingly beat Hoath B, the sole Hoath success coming from Mike Howard’s five set win over Russell Bates. Also in the Premier Division Hoath C went down 5/4 to Iron Room B despite three good wins for Hoath’s Simon Hiller. Due to a very slippery floor Mike Chapman lost all his games but was awarded first prize for the best impression of the late ice dancer John Curry . Also in this division Choughs B beat CW1 5/4 thanks to a Chris Hooper treble.

Division 1 saw a clash between second placed CW2 and bottom team CW4 who were only able to field two players. The result was a 7/2 win for CW2 but CW4’s David Thompson’s strong attacking game gave him two good wins and he only narrowly lost the third in the fifth set to an opponent who is still unbeaten this season.
Division 2 leaders Blean A beat Faversham B 6/3 and Choughs D narrowly beat CW5 by 5/4 with three wins for Chough’s Jordan Brooker.

The top of the table Division 3 match between Faversham D and CW6 led to a comprehensive 7/2 win for the Faversham side, Dennis Hill getting a timely treble for Faversham and the two Warrior’s wins coming from Adam Dyer .

In Division 4, CW9 beat CW11 by 5/0 and Herne Bay J beat Faversham E by the same margin thanks to maximums for Val Ranken and Linda Sopp.
