CANTERBURY & DISTRICT TTA PRESS REPORT 15/12/2001

The big match in Division 2 saw the meeting of the top two sides that have dominated proceedings since the start.
Leaders,Chestfield Warriors 3,faced a stiff test against club colleagues,Chestfield Warriors 2,the latter needing to win to break the stranglehood that Warriors 3 had exerted on the division since the start of the season.
John Wickings was outplayed by Connor Russell, losing 0-3,while Eric Cawkill held off the challenge of Dirk Froebrich in the first 4 sets but faltered in the final set.
Linda Wickings played her outstanding game of the season to inflict a 3-2 win over Jake Coombes to bring her side back in the contest.
Russell maintained his devastating form with a 3-0 win over Cawkill, but John Wickings narrowly missed an opportunity to beat Coombes, losing in the deciding set, leaving Warriors 3 ahead 4-1.
Mrs Wickings failed to reproduce her winning form against Froebrich, losing 0-3.
Just as if it looked that Warriors 3 would register a big win,Cawkill came back in the 5th set to beat Coombes but it was Russell who rounded off the night with a 3-1 win over Mrs Wickings.
John Wickings brought some respectability to the scoreline with a 3-0 win over Froebrich but Warriors 3 got the 6-3 win to maintain their position at the top,6 points ahead of Warriors 2.
Warriors 2 two point lead in the Doubles league was cut to one point as they went down 2-3 to Warriors 3.

Rough Common maintain their unbeaten record in Division 1 with a 9-0 victory over Blean A but the 4 sides below them are involved in a tense struggle to keep up with them.
Two of these sides,Herne Bay C and Iron Room B,met recently in a game that B had to desperately get a good result to make inroads into the top 3. Both sides had each lost 3 matches and an emphatic win here would lift either side into second place.
Bill Baxter opened up for the Bay against Keith Harris, but lost in straight sets to the much improved Harris.
Simon Lee did not fare much better against David Cue,losing 1-3,but Giulio Guariglia did manage to put Bay on the scoresheet with a dogged 3-2 win over Brian Kennett.
Lee and Harris fought out a hard 5 setter before Harris took it in the decider, while Baxter needed 4 sets to overcome Kennett to bring Bay to 2-3.
Cue played brilliantly to move to a 3-1 win over Guariglia, but it was Kennett who finally ended his losing streak with a 5th set win over Lee.
Guariglia and Harris shared the first 4 sets and the 5th set saw Harris complete his third win of the night.
Cue followed his colleague’s example with a 3-1 victory over Baxter to register his hat trick and complete a 7-2 win.
The Bay got some consolation in the doubles, extracting a 3-0 win which lifts them to top slot, two points ahead of Iron Room.
