CANTERBURY & DISTRICT TTA PRESS REPORT 21/04/2011

After the excitement of the Premier Division showdown last week attention focused on the battle for runners up in the 1sr Division singles league.
Herne Bay E faced Herne Bay C ,with second place up for grabs and a place in the Premier Division next season.
The E side entered the game a point ahead of the C side and could afford a 4-5 loss, finsh level on points with the C side but steal second place by virtue of winning more games, while the C side needed to win 6-3 to claim second slot.
The C side were without key player Bill Baxter and brought in Giulio Guariglia while the E side were without Vince Corbin and Mick Micklethwaite took his place.
The C side went off to a flying start with Ross Lejarde overcoming Chris Howard in 3 sets and Guariglia easing past Micklethwaite in 4 sets.
Matt Newman stopped the rot with a gritty crucial 5 set win over Simon Lee.
Guariglia needed a 5th set to overcome Howard but Newman kept his side in there with a 4 set win over Lejarde.
Micklethwaite forced Lee to a deciding set but could not make it count in the final set, giving the C side a 4-2 lead.
Newman completed a noteworthy treble by beating Guariglia in straight sets, leaving the next game between Lee and Howard the most crucial of the night for the C side. The two battled it out, sharing the first 4 sets and it was Howard that came out on top in the decider to take the tie and take the score to 4-4.
Lejarde wrapped up the final tie against Micklethwaite to give the C side a 5-4 win but it is the E side that take the runners up spot in the Div 1 singles. The E side also took the doubles 3-2 which takes them into second place in thje doubles league but no guarantee of runners up in that competition.

Other issues now settled see both Rough Common and Hoath C relegated from the Premier division.
