The Cup Competitions 3rd round matches took place recently in both the Dare Cup and Lew Vale Cup.

In the Dare Cup,the team handicap competition,Chestfield Warriors 6 started with a 190 point lead over Herne Bay E.
Needing to restrict their opponents to 31 points over 2 sets Bay set about the task in ruthless fashion with Ross Lejarde taking apart Peter Stacey,25-11,25-5,but Len Pavelin surprised Mick Micklethwaite by taking the first set,25-20,but lost 20-25 in the second set.
Matt Newman contained Bob Hassam,25-9,25-19,but back came Pavelin against Lejarde, taking 22 points in the first set before succumbing 25-12 in the second set.
Newman continued his devastating form, losing only 12 points over 2 sets to Stacey to keep Bay just 80 points behind at the halfway stage.
Hassam made a significant fightback against Micklethwaite, taking 43 points in his two sets, but Newman contained the dangerous Pavelin to just 26 points in two sets, while Lejarde restricted Hassam to 27 points to bring Bay within 26 points of CW6.
Stacey picked an opportune moment to produce his best table tennis of the evening, taking 38 points off Micklethwaite over 2 sets to keep CW6 14 points in the lead ahead of the doubles.
Bay won the first set,25-16,but in a dramatic second set,CW6 came back to score 22 points and win by the slender margin of 2 points.
Elsewhere in the Dare Cup,Heron B moved to a 14 point win over CW8,while CW3 rolled over their club colleagues,CW3,by 52 points and a 130 point lead was not enough for CW2 over Herne Bay C,losing by 43 points.
CW1’s 60 point lead over Choughs A looked to be enough but the latter scraped through by 2 points.

In the Lew Vale Cup,the individual handicap team competition, two of the ties needed the doubles to produce a result.
Natives A went into a 5-1 lead over Heron A but the latter fought back to 7-7 before Peter Chapman won both his sets against Adam Goodall to put Heron ahead. With Ian Blogg and Barrie Thomas sharing a set each,Heron needed just one set in the doubles to win 11-8
Herne Bay F were struggling against CW6,losing 6-10 before Graham Waters ground out two winning sets,22-20,22-20,against Bob Hassam to take the game to the doubles. Bay clung on in the first set to win 28-26 and levelled with a 21-15 win to take the game to a deciding set,but they failed to capitalise on their late surge, losing 19-21.
Other games in the Lew Vale Cup saw Blue Lawn sweep aside Herne Bay I,11-1,while CW2 proved too strong for club colleagues,CW4,beating them 11-4.
Choughs E were 4-6 down to Dizzy Heights A,but Yu Zhu and Matthew Clayson used their 8 point leads to beat Rob Easton and Dennis Brindleyin both sets to move 10-4 ahead.Thomas Zhu sealed the match with a 21-19 win over Easton off a 7 point lead.
