CANTERBURY & DISTRICT TTA PRESS REPORT 16/12/10

The teams struggling to find points have emerged in all the divisions. In the Premier division Rough Common had not won a game in 6 outings but scored an unlikely victory over a two man Hoath B side. The Hoath duo, without key player,Mike Howard, struggled to make any impact on Mike Jones, giving Rough Common a 6-3 win.
In the same division,Iron Room A are struggling for consistency, having lost their last 3 games.Their recent encounter was against Faversham A,a side that has slowly moved up the table after a shaky start. Colin May gave Iron Room a good start with a 3-0 win over Tina Stewart but Azim Griffith hit back with a win over Lee Edgington.Paul Smallman restored his side’s lead with a 3-1 win over French player,CJ. Edgington fought off a determined performance from Mrs Stewart to scrape a win in the 5th set.CJ eased past May in straight sets but Smallman forged his side into a 4-2 lead with a key 3-0 win over Griffith.Edgington took out CJ in 4 sets but Smallman was taken all the way by Mrs Stewart before emerging victorious in the deciding set.In the final game of the night Griffith held oof the challenge of May in a sparkling 5 setter, but Iron Room got the crucial 6-3 win which they needed to stop their slide down the division, while Faversham move up to 5th spot.

The two Choughs sides in Division 1 find themselves in the embarrassing position of occupying the two bottom slots at the foot of the division. Choughs B had made an average start to the season with 16 points from 4 games but their last 3 games have proved disastrous. Against Blue Lawn Lilac Time they were a player short and were under immediate pressure from Blue Lawn, who secured a 6-3 win. Things got worse against Herne Bay C,as they were again down to 2 players and both failed to register a win against a rampant Bay side who did their promotion prospects no end of good with a 9-0 win. Against Herne Bay E, they could have faced a total whitewash again had it not been for a spirited performance from Derek Smith. He breezed past all his opponents without dropping a set but it did not prevent side losing 6-3.
The outlook is not looking too good for Choughs C,six points behind their B side and 5 defeats from six matches. Their one victory came in the match against Blue Lawn. Farouk Karim and John Burgess had got wins in their opening games against Barry Shirley and Chris Barkaway but Ricky Kay had struck back with wins over Russell Swain and a 5 setter with Karim. Kay completed his hat trick with a win over Burgess to level the m,atch at 4-4 but Swain came good with a timely win over Shirley to give Choughs a 5-4 win but they have a struggle on their hands and yet to play their B side in an all important relegation game.
