In the Kent Veterans League,newly promoted to Div.1,Canterbury A, had a closely fought opening fixture against Ashford A. Having lost the two ties,Canterbury looked to be heading 3-0 down after Mick Eames lost the first two sets to Nick Owen,but he hung on to grab the next 3 sets to take the tie. Clive Hollingsbee made a crucial 3 set win over Alan Provan while Mebs Virani overcame Owen in straight sets. Eames struggled at 1-2 down against Chris Hooper but rallied to take the next two sets,11-9,12-10,to forge Canterbury ahead 4-2. Owen took the first set,19-17 against Hollingsbee and this gave him the momentum to take the next two sets,but Eames restored the lead for Canterbury with a 3-1 win over Provan. Hooper had a comfortable win over Virani,leaving Canterbury 5-4 up ahead of the doubles. The Canterbury pairing of Hollingsbee and Virani edged their way to a 11-9 win in the opening set but lost the second,7-11. A close 3rd set saw Canterbury steal the set,12-10 and Canterbury romped home in the 4th set,11-4 to win 6-4.

In the Vets 3rd division,Canterbury B have made a positive start in their opening two fixtures. Against Canterbury C, Barry Hull made a fine start with a 3-1 win over Mick Barwick,but Mick Mickletwaite was was pushed all the way to a deciding set by John Wickings before clinching it 11-8. Linda Wickings had a 2-1 lead over Ian Blogg only to lose the next two sets to give the B side a 3-0 lead. The lead increased further to 5-0 as Hull and Blogg swept aside John Wickings and Barwick. Linda Wickings battled doggedly against Micklethwaite,going 2-1 up but losing 8-11 in the 4th set. Despite that setbackback she put the pressure on her opponent to take the 5th set,11-7. The B side maintained their superiority in the next 3 singles ties,the only resistance coming from Barwick who took Mickletwaite to 5 sets,only to lose 10-12 in the 5th. Blogg and Hull completed a 3 set win in the doubles to give the B side an emphatic 9-1 win.
In their second game,Canterbury B were hosts to Maidstone C and were soon 3-1 up through two wins from Mebs Virani and one from Mick Micklethwaite. The latter faced Richard Bashford in his next game and took a 2-1 lead after 3 gruelling sets. Bashford staged a recovery in the 4th to take it 11-6 and stormed to a 5-2 lead in the 5th before Micklethwaite got his game together to claw his way back to 9-9 and seal the tie with a 11-9 victory. The next 4 ties all went to Canterbury without the loss of a set and Barry Hull and Virani rounded off the match with a 3-0 win in the doubles and an overall 9-1 victory.
