Third round cup results show mixed fortunes for lower division sides in both the Dare Cupand the Lew Vale Cup
2nd division sides,Faversham A and Blean A,met in a 3rd round Dare Cup clash, with Faversham having a 60 point lead. The first 3 matches saw all 3 Faversham players taking sets off their Blean opponents.Del Whiddett made the breakthrough for Blean with a 25-14,25-14 win over Craig Kirby and this prompted both Laurie Newman and Paul Simmons to extract significant wins to put their side ahead by 3 points after 7 games. They never relinquished their lead and ran out winners by 32 points.
1st division side,Whitstable Natives A,faced a huge 300 point deficit against 4th division side,Faversham E and were in trouble when Jamie Heaton took 43 points in his two sets against reserve player,Keith Garrad.Barry Cook clawed back some of these lost points as he restricted Meurisse Elysee to just 6 points in their two sets, but Garrad’s nightmare continued against Harry Law,dropping 41 points. The match was over by the 1st leg of the final singles game, with Favershamwinning by 86 points.
Premier side,Choughs A,faced a 300 point handicap against Natives C and started briskly in the first two games but were pegged back as Nick Fairweather took 42 points off Darren Mcculloch-Smith in his two sets. Choughs steadied themselves in the next 4 games, to bring them almost back on course and it was Mculloch-Smith who atoned for his earlier disappointment by beating Peter Dale 25-3,25-10. Choughs won the doubles,25-3,25-10 to win by 7 points.
The Lew Vale Cup clash between Warriors 7 and Choughs F was a close affair that saw the two sides share the first 4 games. Josh Algar won both his opening games in straight sets, but Clive Curnick forged his side ahead with a straight sets win over Craig Francis. The next 4 singles were shared, bringing the score to 10-8 in favour of Choughs. Warriors needed both sets of the doubles to force a deciding set but lost the first set 17-21 and the match 8-11.
Dizzy Heights A had an exciting Lew Vale clash with Choughs D. Thomas Zhu’s 11 point start over Joe Chan earned him a set but Matthew Clayson was not so fortunate against John Burgess, losing 20-22,20-22 off a 16 point lead. Richard Partridge extended Choughs lead to 5-1 as a weathered a 4 point handicap to beat Yu Zhu 24-22,21-16. Clayson hit back for his side with a 21-18,21-17 win ,followed by a 2-0 set win by Thomas Zhu over Partridge to level the score at 5-5. Burgess squeezed past Yu Zhu in 2 straight sets but back came Clayson to claim both his sets to level the match at 7-7. With Yu Zhu taking a set off Chan, it was Thomas Zhu who provided the performance of the night,,beating Burgess 21-13,21-12 off a 13 point start to forge his side into a 10-8 lead. Choughs scraped the opening doubles set,21-18,but a fightback by Dizzy Heights saw them take the second set 21-19 and the match 11-9
